What is a 20 EMA Base?
A 20 EMA Base is a setup where a leading stock pulls back to its 20-day EMA, pauses, tightens into a coil and then breaks out. It's a reset inside an existing uptrend.
Setup guide
Even the strongest stocks need to rest. The 20 EMA Base is what that rest looks like in a leader: a pullback to the 20-day average, a quiet pause, and a tight coil that often comes right before the next move.

A 20 EMA Base is a setup where a leading stock with a strong multi-month advance pulls back to its 20 EMA, pauses, and tightens into a small coil before breaking out. There are two levels to watch: the coil pivot (the high of the tight coil, an earlier entry) and the base pivot (the high of the whole base). Earnings growth that isn't slowing helps separate real leaders from short-lived movers.
A leader resets, then coils.
A leader's big multi-month move into the pivot
The pullback touches or dips below the 20 EMA
Several sessions of rest inside the base
Candles shrink into a narrow range
Price moves above the coil or base pivot
The coil is where the range dries up — the market's way of saying sellers are done.
A 20 EMA Base is a reset inside an uptrend. A stock that has led the market for months pulls back to its 20-day exponential moving average, cools off, and then starts to tighten. It's one of the three focused momentum scans on N.E.X.T.
The 20 EMA matters because strong stocks often find buyers there. Funds and traders who missed the first move use the pullback to get in, and that steady demand shows up as a calmer, tighter range.
Key idea
This setup is for leaders, not laggards. The pullback is only interesting because the stock was so strong before it.
20 EMA Base, step by step
A 20 EMA Base gives you two prices to watch, and knowing which one you're using is part of the plan.
The high of the tight coil. Moving above it is an earlier entry — usually a lower price and a tighter stop, but the stock still has the base high above it.
The high of the whole base. Moving above it confirms the stock has cleared all of the pause. It comes later and usually at a higher price.
Watch the room overhead
If the coil high sits very close to the base pivot, there's little room before resistance. In that case it often makes sense to wait for the base pivot.
Price tells you a stock is strong. Earnings help tell you why. Leaders that keep moving for months usually have business growth behind them, and a base is more convincing when EPS growth isn't slowing down.
A stock with a big price move but slowing earnings can still base — but the next leg has less fuel. That's why the 20 EMA Base scan on N.E.X.T checks that earnings growth hasn't slowed.
How a 20 EMA Base fails
Watch out
A tight coil improves the structure; it doesn't promise a breakout. Keep a stop below the coil or base and size the position before you enter.
| 20 EMA Base | Follow Through Swing | |
|---|---|---|
| Stock type | Leader after a strong multi-month advance | Fast-moving leader |
| The pullback | Touches or closes below the 20 EMA | Holds above the 10 EMA; 20 EMA not touched |
| Base length | Several sessions, up to about six weeks | A few sessions |
| Tightness | Tight coil inside the base | Short, shallow pause |
| Levels to watch | Coil pivot and base pivot | Pivot high |
| Earnings check | EPS growth not slowing | Price and trend driven |
Exact thresholds are built into the N.E.X.T scans.

A 20 EMA Base is a setup where a leading stock pulls back to its 20-day EMA, pauses, tightens into a coil and then breaks out. It's a reset inside an existing uptrend.
A tight coil is a small group of narrow-range candles inside a base. It shows the price range drying up, which often means sellers are running out.
The coil pivot is the high of the tight coil and gives an earlier entry. The base pivot is the high of the whole base; moving above it confirms the stock has cleared the full pause.
From several sessions up to about six weeks from the pivot. Bases that run much longer tend to lose the urgency that makes the setup work.
Leaders that keep moving usually have growing earnings behind them. A base is more convincing when EPS growth isn't slowing, because the next move has real business fuel.
